To register a "new to you" ATV/Snowmobile, you must provide the following documentation:

  • Dealer sale (you purchased this at a dealer who collected sales tax) - you need to provide the "green" dealer certificate showing the make, model, year, & serial number of the ATV. This is proof that you have paid your sales tax.
  • Private sale - you must provide a bill of sale which lists the seller's name & address, the amount paid for the ATV, as well as the make, model, year, & serial number of the ATV.

If you purchase a new ATV during the registration period and sell one which you had registered in the current registration period, you may transfer that registration. You will need to provide the registration to the ATV which you sold and indicate to whom you transferred the ATV.

To reregister an ATV which was not registered in Milford last year, please provide a previous registration.

ATVs may be registered at the Town Office during normal business hours or online through IF&W here.

Beginning in 2006, IF&W removed the plate requirement for ATVs. Annual stickers are now required.

Boat Registrations

Boat registrations expire on December 31st.

To register a "new to you" boat, you must provide the following documentation:

  • Dealer sale (you purchased this at a dealer who collected sales tax) - you need to provide the "green" dealer certificate showing the make, model, year, & serial number of the boat. This is proof that you have paid your sales tax.
  • Private sale - you must provide a bill of sale which lists the seller's name & address, the amount paid for the boat, as well as the make, model, year, & serial number of the boat.

If you purchase a new boat during the registration period and sell one which you had registered in the current registration period, you may transfer that registration. You will need to provide the registration to the boat which you sold and indicate to whom you transferred the boat.

To re-register a boat which was not registered in Milford last year, please provide a previous registration.

Boats  may be registered at the Town Office during normal business hours.  Because excise tax is due on boats, they may not be registered online through IF&W's website.  Boats must be registered in the town of your legal residence - regardless of where the boat is housed - if you are a Maine resident.  If you are not a resident of the State of Maine, your boat is registered in the town in which the boat is kept.

Beginning in 2008, IF&W combined the registration and mil foil stickers.  Only one sticker is now required for freshwater boats.

Other Boat Info

Beginning in 2002, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF&W) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) began an education program to help prevent the spread of non-indigeneous invasive plants to Maine.

This education program is funded, in part, through the sale of Lake and Water Protection Stickers, commonly known as "Mil foil stickers" or "Weed stickers".  This sticker was required in addition to the registration sticker for all motorized watercraft not in tidal waters.  In 2008, IF&W combined the registration sticker and the "Mil foil" sticker.

Non-indigenous invasive plants have spread through most states.  Their spread occurs primarily through boating activity - when watercraft is moved from water body to water body without being cleaned.  One plant can permanently infest an entire lake.  Invasive plants are impossible to remove once they are established.  They spread rapidly - and are often carried on boats, motors, trailers, and fishing gear.  They can survive out of water for several days.

More information regarding invasive species may be found on the IF&W & DEP websites.
